Installation & performance
Colorful is an installation and performance with 14 minutes of performance documentation.
When we engage with people, we leave a thread of traumatic memories and it eventually surrounds the whole society. Can we be free of being captive in the yarn? Colorful demonstrates how we overcome and deal with unforgettable trauma once we enter into a society and meet new people.
Ultramarine blue is the artist’s favorite color, but ironically it is also a traumatic color, evoking memories from 2010 to 2015. During that period, the artist was learning aquarelle techniques while sitting on a chair for 14 hours a-day at the art institute situated in Seoul, South Korea. She was forced to use only ultramarine blue and Vandyke colors to make the base tone for aquarelle the paintings. The artist wanted to use other colors, however she wasn’t allowed to. Diversity was an unacceptable thing. The tacit rule was set in place by the art academy for decades and it changed ultramarine blue from her favorite color to a traumatic color.
In the performance part of the artwork, the artist engages with the audience by unravelling ultramarine-blue yarn, which is tied to their chairs. The audience is the artist’s essential and central component for this artwork. They become the co-creators of this performance work through interactivity with the artist and artwork. They compose a big part of her performance and the meaning of the artwork is completed through audience involvement. The performance presents a connection that can comfort viewers and creates an emotional bond between the audience and the story.
Everyone has their own story and they leave a trace of past memories in their own histories. Since we are connected to each other through the tangled yarn of society, we subconsciously leave our footprints as unforgettable memories in others by spreading the yarn further. However, we are healed by associating with people in a jumbled society and we can be free of our traumas through sharing.
